A Plan for a Happy Life

By Celia Rocks

By new, I don't necessarily mean a neighbor who has just moved in. I mean someone you've lived near for five years, but to whom you've never spoken! A sense of community is vitally important, and most Americans miss out on that nowadays. Resolve to connect with at least one neighbor; take her a batch of homegrown tomatoes, or ask her to walk with you, or offer to trade babysitting services. Better still, hold a summer barbecue and invite everyone on your block!

August – I Will Use Cash Whenever Possible
This is the first step in developing a healthy relationship with money. When you actually see and feel the money leaving your hands, you become very aware of how much you're spending! My book discusses at length the importance of curbing high consumer ways and getting out of debt (which I call "financial cancer," but the cash idea is a good starting point). Do it for a month, and you'll be amazed at how it changes your perspective!

September – I Will Work a Workout Into My Schedule
OK, you had to know it was coming. No New Year's resolution list could be complete without it! Yes, if you're able, you should get into the habit of exercising several times a week. Not just to lose weight, but as a way of honoring yourself. You deserve to be fit, to feel good, to have lots of energy. Just a simple 30-minute walk can do wonders for your outlook – and it can be a lovely experience, especially when the leaves begin to change.
