Treating Depression Naturally

"Everyone is an individual," McHenry says. "Tests such as blood, urine, hair analysis and others can reveal more about what your unique body needs nutritionally."

Supplementing Your Diet
To increase the benefits of a healthy diet, you can add certain supplements and herbs to combat depression. St. John's Wort, for example, is commonly given to patients looking for a natural way to feel better, as is gingko biloba. Nancy Schimelpfening, the Depression Guide at About.com, suffered from depression since childhood. She tried a number of prescription drugs after she was "officially" diagnosed at age 30, but was unhappy with the side effects – the drugs left her feeling numb.

"I switched to St. John's Wort about five years ago and have not had a significant episode of depression since," she says. Nor has she experienced unwanted side effects. "I now know that what keeps my depression under control is a combination of herbs, a low glycemic diet and adequate sleep," she says.

Some patients suffering from depression also have had success with SAM-e supplements. SAM-e is a chemical normally produced by the brain, but is decreased in people suffering from depression. Behling warns that St. John's Wort, SAM-e and 5-HTP should not be used in combination with alcohol or other sedative medications, supplements, herbs or antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Prozac and Sarafem. "Always consult with a medical or naturopathic physician before utilizing any antidepressant supplements or medication, as correct dosage and combination are very important," she says.
