Religious Differences at Holiday Time
How to Merge Faiths to Create Lasting Family Traditions
By Cara J. Stevens
As parents, we are always on the lookout for opportunities to impart values to our children, and holidays are a perfect time to focus on the ones you feel most strongly about.
If you celebrate Christmas, tell your children the story of Jesus' acts of loving kindness and charity. If you are Jewish, tell the story of the Maccabee's cooperation and faith, which led to a miraculous victory. For Kwanzaa, recite the Tamshi* and pay homage to your ancestors and their struggles for freedom and identity.
In coming together as a couple and creating a family together while recognizing your differences, you are embracing acceptance and understanding, and these are wonderful values to pass on to your children. "My advice to parents is to not fear other religions," says Zinn. "They all have something to teach us and we should seek out the pearls of wisdom and pass them on."
