Pages:  1  2

Electrical Cords and Outlets

  • Put plastic plug covers in unused outlets.
  • Protect outlets with ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs).
  • Keep cords and power strips out of children's reach.

Doors and Windows

  • Use safety glazing on glass doors and panels.
  • Cut window blind cords, and use safety tassels on blind and drapery cords.

Furniture

  • Cover sharp edges and corners.
  • Secure the television and other heavy items so they cannot tip over.
  • Check to see that toy chest lids cannot fall down and lock. Better yet, use no lid at all.

Kitchen

  • Use the stove's back burners, and turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.
  • Keep hot foods, liquids and appliances out of children's reach.
  • Keep scissors, knives and other sharp objects in latched or high cabinets.
  • Remove doors from unused refrigerators or freezers so children can't hide in them.
  • Keep a working fire extinguisher nearby, and make sure older children and adults know how to use it.
  • Store dishwasher detergent and cleaning supplies out of children's reach.

Preventing Falls

  • Never leave an infant alone on a changing table, sofa, bed or other high place.
  • Place self-latching doors or non-accordion gates at the top of stairs.
  • Use window guards or safety netting on windows, balconies, decks and landings.
  • Do not use a baby walker with wheels.
