Angel on Earth

Brad Baker

Holly has always liked driving in the car, so the pair will often go for a leisurely drive around the city and countryside. "We go to all the kids' sporting events," says Brad, whether it's golf, volleyball or softball. And they are always sure to attend church each Sunday.

"One of the toughest things is when to tell her 'no,'" Brad says. Because Holly tires easily and often needs naps throughout the day, he has to be cognizant of her need for rest. "She always wants to go," he says.

Brad is also sure to take time out for himself to recharge. "You just need time alone," he says. Every day he spends lunch alone, quietly reading or listening to music. He recommends that strongly to other caregivers.

Over the course of nearly 25 years, Holly's MS has progressed, causing her to lose the use of her legs, her left arm and slowly her right arm, leaving her in a wheelchair. Holly also has had her fair share of surgeries to help with spasticity and bladder problems, and she is beginning to experience some short-term memory loss. But while Brad does occasionally find himself wishing that she could be healthy, cook meals and play sports – for her happiness, and his – he takes it all in stride and accepts the task he's been given.

What it comes down to day after day for Brad is the unconditional love of his wife and the vows he took so many years ago. "The more I take care of her, the more I love her," Brad says.
