Party Hearty – and Healthy!

Eat Less Fat
By eating less fat you will eat fewer calories and do your heart a favor. Avoid fried foods, extra sauces, dressings or gravies. If you do eat higher fat foods, eat a smaller portion. Replace some of the high fat items with any fruit, vegetables or breads that are offered. You should always try to eat a variety of food with each meal.

Stay in Control
Avoid skipping meals in anticipation of overindulging. By eating regular meals you will be more likely to make healthier choices, dish up sensible portions and resist second and third helpings. Chew slowly, set your fork down between bites and savor your food. Remember to stop when you are full. It is simple but it works. You may be enjoying your first plate of food when others are taking second servings. You will be less likely to return for more food when everyone else is done eating.

Move Away From the Food
The "grazing" effect can cost you hundreds of calories if you are not aware of what you are doing. You are more likely to eat all evening long if you stand next to the buffet table. Eat your meal and then move away – literally. It is a great opportunity to participate in games or activities, check out your surroundings or get to know new people.
