Changing Career Paths
It's Never Too Late to Start a Second Career
By Teri Brown
Some Key Questions
Fortgang says a good place to start is by asking yourself a series of questions such as the following:
- What kind of money will you need to make?
- Will you be willing to move locations to pursue a new thing?
- What will that mean to children or spouse or nearby relatives?
"One should also consider how long it might take to break into something new," Fortgang says. "A cross-over plan from one career to the next is essential."
Also ask yourself:
- Are you going to quit your old career right away?
- If not, will you be able to moonlight?
- Can you volunteer to get experience?
- Do you need to retrain or go back to school?
Changing careers in mid-path isn't impossible, and it just might be one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself as you begin another phase in your life. The best advice to older citizens wanting to change their career paths? Remember that it's never too late!
