On the Road with Grandma
Discovering Lacrosse and Annapolis
By Carol Greenberg
Lacrosse originated as a Native American game. It is a combination of football, hockey and basketball. It has been called the fastest game on two feet and a grueling test of stamina. There are 10 positions on a team: one goalie, three attack positions, three midfielders and three defense positions. The object is to put a 5-ounce rubber ball into the opponent's goal using a long-handled stick with a triangular pocket at one end, while keeping your opponent from doing the same to you. French missionaries during the 15th century documented the Native Americans playing the game. They reportedly played not just for recreation but also to settle disputes and toughen warriors for battle. Today, many high schools and colleges have leagues of their own.
Unfortunately, before our trip we failed to make reservations at one of the many inns in the Kent Island area. We stayed at a more expensive hotel in Annapolis, which meant driving every morning across the bridge and back again at night. Thankfully, we were able to uncover many of the attractions Annapolis has to offer, including some outstanding seafood restaurants.
Annapolis is ideal for a family vacation. Situated on the Chesapeake Bay, the Annapolis Naval Academy is the place to learn about America's naval history. John Paul Jones, who played a prominent role in American naval history, is buried at the site. For the young children, Annapolis offers a Pirate's Adventure ship where they can dress as pirates, get their faces painted and fire a water cannon while their parents relax on the cruise.
