Wowie Maui!

Grandparents and Kids in Paradise

Multi-generational travel is on the rise. This year I personally know grandparents who have treated their grandkids to Disneyland, the Grand Canyon and even Europe, so when my parents invited my 6-year-old son, Max, and I on a trip to Maui we were thrilled to join in this trend.

Of course, my son elected to sit next to his beloved "Grandma D." and "Pop" on the airplane, so I settled back with a novel for the first time in ages. (Thanks Mom and Dad!) When I checked on the threesome, they were spending quality time holding a chess tournament (my dad and Max are chess fanatics), planning our Hawaii agenda (whale-watching, Luau with fire-dancers, snorkeling) or reading Captain Underpants aloud and laughing.

We arrived in balmy Maui in the evening and headed straight to Kapalua Beach for a moonlight stroll. Luminescent waves, powdery sand, fresh salt air, a full moon and shells for Max to gather – paradise for everyone.

Zzz's to Please
We loved our stay at the oceanfront Wailea Marriott with its recent $25 million dollar renovation. The casual, open-air dining, big rooms with island d袯r (including mini-fridge, robes and an in-room coffee maker – an essential for my mom) and pools with slides and an aquatic "jungle gym" kept us happy and relaxed.

My mom and I sipped coffee each morning and enjoyed "girl talk" on our roomy balcony to a soothing wave serenade while my dad and Max collected shells, coral and pebble "treasures" on the beach. My parents (avid gardeners) loved pointing out exotic plants to Max and I as we explored the hotel's lush grounds. The Wailea Marriott is located at 3700 Wailea Alanui, Wailea. Call 808-879-1922 for more information.

Other family-friendly accommodations for multi-generational travelers include the Grand Wailea Resort (pricey but plush) located at 3850 Wailea Alanui, Wailea – call 808-875-1234 – or try one of Maui's condos (save money by fixing meals in the kitchens and enjoy more space and privacy than in hotels).
