30s and 40s:
At least 500 mg of vitamin C and 100 to 400 i.u. of vitamin E should be taken. These antioxidants may help to slow the aging process and protect the heart. Keep up with the calcium, vitamin D and iron as well.

40s and 50s:
Continue with the antioxidants, and add a B complex supplement that contains B6 and B12.

Registered nurse Ellen Kamhi, is familiar with using natural remedies for treating arthritis. Kamhi, also known as The Natural Nurse, is the author of several books including Cycles of Life: Herbs & Energy Techniques for the Stages of a Woman's Life (Evans & Co. 2001).

Kamhi became interested in natural medicine at age 12 after her spine was injured during a fall from a horse. When she was told she would need surgery if she wanted to walk again, she felt that there had to be another alternative, so she went to the library and began doing research. With her father as her ally, she sent off for calcium supplements and anti-inflammatory herbs and began to use them. When she returned for her pre-surgical evaluation, the doctor said she had healed so well she wouldn't need surgery after all. The precocious 12-year-old showed her doctor her list of remedies. Kamhi still remembers his reaction.

"He held the paper at arm's length, as if it were contagious, smirked at me and told me it was just a bunch of old wives' tales," says Kamhi. "I knew he was wrong, and I've spent my life since then researching these traditional medicines. There's no doubt that they do work."
