"I have found that keeping clients informed every step of the way and providing a good support system is very important in relieving the stress and uncertainty that can be associated with the moving process," Thomas says.

The Emotional Component
For many, downsizing means giving up some of those material things that are so closely associated with events throughout one's life. Family heirlooms, antiques and dishes can be very difficult to part with. It's important for those downsizing to keep in mind that they will always have the memory, even if the item is gone.

"Many times, family members will pass along special possessions to other family members and delight in seeing someone else enjoy them as much as they did," Thomas says. "Knowing that someone else enjoys your treasures is very satisfying."

People are often surprised at how much more enjoyment they get from the items they decided to keep. This is a perfect time to get rid of your plain dishes and use your good dishes for every day. Keep a few special pieces of furniture and use them, instead of keeping them in a room that is seldom used.
