(RandomHouse/Crown, 1996). "They can happen without effort and become self-sustaining," Newman says.

Here, veteran grandparents offer advice and tips on how you, too, can work alongside your children's children to create lasting memories and traditions, whether for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday or any special occasion.

Involve the Kids
"When kids irritate, get them to participate!" is the motto of Donna Erickson, a Minneapolis, Minn., mother of three children and a weekly syndicated newspaper columnist of Prime Time Together With Kids.

"Give them a job to do and they'll feel part of the festivities," says Erickson, who is also author of Fabulous Funstuff for Families (Augsburg Publishing, 2001), and other books, and she hosts Donna's Day, a PBS television show.

First, be sure you've got the right equipment for your grandkids, recommends Donna Strom, 61, of Vancouver, Wash., who has two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren, ages 2 to 17. Her home is stocked with an ample supply of play dough, cookie cutters, pencils, crayons, felt-tip pens and blank paper for drawing projects.

"I'm not a coloring-book person," says Strom, a former elementary-school teacher. "I'd rather have them do free line stuff."

When it's time to involve kids in a crafts project, Strom spreads out her solid-blue oilcloth on her ample dining-room table and lets them go at it. "But I don't get it all out at one time, so it doesn't get overwhelming," she says. "Otherwise, they get overwhelmed and the play dough dries out."
