Expert Q&A

By Susan Bartell
Licensed Psychologist

My child found my mother's package of Depends and asked why she wears grown-up diapers. What is the best way to handle this? Is honesty always the best policy?

In this case I think honesty is important. Children don't have the same responses that adults do to these types of potentially embarrassing conversations. Most children will listen to you and be interested but without judgment. This type of conversation encourages openness in relationships, and one day your [child] may talk to you about something private, because he or she will feel that you have been open and honest too."
