Expert Q&A

What is the best way to discuss incontinence with a loved one?

Talking to others about incontinence can diminish or prevent the feeling of being alone or emotionally isolated. First, most people feel better when they believe that someone understands their fears. Also, someone who fears leaking actually has two fears when going out in public with someone who does not know about the incontinence: leaking and being unable to hide the secret. They might also be afraid of causing their friend or loved one to be inconvenienced. But once a friend/loved one is aware and supportive, the person with incontinence only has to worry about leaking but not being ashamed with their friend."
