Expert Q&A

Can chiropractic help reduce incontinence in adults?

Incontinence, like any symptom, typically responds favorably to the pressure-relieving benefits of the chiropractic adjustment. To understand how a chiropractic adjustment might help someone with incontinence, one needs to understand how his or her body works.

The brain and spinal cord comprise the central nervous system of the body, controlling all function. Those functions encompass all sensory and motor control, [including those that control urination]. The central nervous system is protected by the skull and vertebral column (backbone).

Our backbone is made up of many moving parts that permit movement around the joints. If these joints should not be functioning properly ... then pressure is applied to the nerve roots, resulting in diminished communication between the brain and [the areas the nerves reach]."
