Expert Q&A

By Paul Coleman
Psychologist Family Therapist

How can hiding incontinence from your family members affect your relationships?

While incontinence is annoying and perhaps embarrassing, reports indicate that the majority of people with the problem cope just fine. It is more of a problem, emotionally speaking, when the incontinence is severe. If the incontinence is more severe, then hiding it can pose a problem. They must make excuses for why they keep running to the bathroom or why they do not wish to go to certain places. Any secret can add to a level of confusion for family members."
