Expert Q&A

What is the best way to discuss incontinence with a health care provider on behalf of a loved one?

Health care providers need to know the facts, the symptoms, the frequency, the intensity and the conditions under which urinary incontinence (UI) occurs. Then they can provide treatment or management suggestions. Often they suggest limiting fluid intake, changing medications, stopping caffeine, having a urinal by the bed and so on.

If the UI seems mild and stress-induced (coughing, sneezing, etc.), I would not override the patient's desires and discuss the problem with a provider without the patient's permission."
